SUNFLOWER SEEDS AND ME....

What is it with these seeds? I have never eaten them before, don’t know where I’ve been. There was a young man when I worked at Teledyne, and he ate sunflower seeds all night long, really! I always said “no thank you” when he tried hard to convince me to dig in. But they are a healthy choice and they come with pretty good credentials. I enjoy them in salads especially, they are really good raw and unsalted.

They contain complete proteins with only 20 percent fat, which is mostly unsaturated. They do not need further preparation because they are a complete protein. Groovy (old school). The seeds are a good source of zinc, calcium, phosphorus, and iron, as well as vitamins A, D, E, and several of the B-complex. Whole seeds have a good shelf life, but once hulled they should be refrigerated.

This thought just came to me…When I was very young, my mama had big yellow sunflowers in the front yard with the rooster cones, roses , and all the other flowers I can’t remember. My mama loved flowers and growing things, even after she was too old and unable to maintain a flower garden we always tried to make sure flowers were in the house, so she could see them. Strange, I hadn’t thought of those big yellow flowers in years..now the seeds are my friends, and they’re good for me. Imagine that!

25 DAYS OF SUCCESS....

Wonderful day of walking and clean choices. I always do better when I start the day with walking, nothing else seems to work, if I wait and wait, the day gets “out of joint”. NOT DEFEATED!!!!!!

One of the greatest victories I’m learning on this journey (and it is a journey), is to reposition myself when the need arises and to move on. That’s big for me, you see; I have a tendency to cave and give up. But I’ve learned how to win at my own game…LOL

I hadn’t walked at all Wednesday or Thursday of this week, no real reason, just didn’t get out or use the Leslie tapes. My husband asked me Friday night “why you stopped walking”, I knew I had to reposition quickly, I was leaving a door open for the “boogey man”. I got my tapes out, and walked 3 miles, which is harder than any walk around the block! Leslie Sansone is the BOMB…

I know better than to exercise close to bedtime, but I refused to sabotage my own efforts with laziness and carelessness. How proud I am of myself. I refuse to give the devil a chance to say, AHA, I KNEW IT. You see, walking is one of my greatest joys, the devil wants to take my joy but I'm not weak anymore. I gave him a black eye, and fed my spirit with the strength that my God so richly provides. God gives us the choice and the opportunity, we decide to do the right thing….or not...Oh Jesus, Jesus, Jesus WHAT A WONDER YOU ARE!

PRAYER REQUEST

I’d appreciate your prayers on behalf of my two sisters in North Carolina. Kaye had a seizure while driving, lost control and ran into a building. Thank God no else was involved or hurt. She’s out of rehab, but will be off her feet for a while. My sister Brenda didn’t get banged up as badly but has a cracked collar bone, and her leg got busted up but has healed nicely. Please pray God will mend and heal them and that He will send those along to “help”. I plan to get there when I can. Thank you and may God bless you every one!

13 SUCCESSFUL DAYS....SWEET

Today is Gilda’s 39th birthday and for this we say THANK YOU JESUS! You see Gilda had leukemia when she was just four years old and God miraculously healed her, and she has been a healthy “Pumpkin” (her nickname), ever since. Though she is handicapped she doesn’t know it and in many ways, neither do we. She is more “normal” than most people I know. Our lives revolve around Gilda, and there are many things we can and can’t do because of special care she needs, but honestly; she brings more joy than anything else. I am proud to say I PASSED on the ice cream and cake and fixings of the birthday celebration, and I’m the better for it! LOL. KEEP MOVING...

IF YOU CAN’T FLY, RUN..IF YOU CAN’T RUN WALK; BUT WHATEVER YOU DO..KEEP MOVING
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

No doubt Dr. King may or may not have been talking about walking and getting into optimum health, but the quote surely addresses all areas of life…keep moving.
Standing still is not an option, for we die when we’ll still, both mentally and physically and spiritually and emotionally, and socially, we must keep moving. Moving how? in our minds and in our aspirations for the good of ourselves and others, for the good of our countrymen and our neighborhoods and beyond. .moving lest we become stale in our minds and relationships, yes keep moving….

FOURTH DAY, SUCCESSFUL!

The early morning walk made my day, or contributed to it anyway!! Sometimes I’m too dramatic. LOL. Thank God I got up early and got my 3 in, and later this afternoon while the men of the family worked on the yard and made it ever so beautiful, I walked another one and a half just for the heaven of it.....

Today was successful in many ways, I have to watch the night time, that’s when I want to munch, I call on an half apple or a few grapes, but try to busy myself with hobbies like writing and reading. I also use my FAT GRABBERS before each meal to curve my appetite and to add additional fiber and other benefits. Then too, I have learned that many times I'm not really hungry, I may be thirsty. I read a book by Dr. Batman(not real name), that really helped me with that. So I try to grab a bottle of water when the munch demons come out! If I can eat with success for four days, why not five and beyond…Lets go for it...

LADY IN THE GREEN DRESS

I will be the first to admit that I don’t understand life. There are too many variables and situations and struggles and goods and bads and uglys and rights and wrongs and on and on…and on…..

But I do understand the value of lifting each other up as we pass through this life. I believe that those who help others in their endeavors, have been placed and ordained for us in a special way. With that in mind, let me tell you about a friend of mine.

She’s a lady in a green dress, who encourages me in my walking, and makes me feel like “you can make it”. Now I’m sure she wears other dresses and hats and shoes and fixings of all kinds, but I call her “the lady in the green dress,” for mostly that’s how I see and remember her.

My friend lives in a big house on 14th Avenue around the corner from my house. For reasons unknown to me but very familiar to God (He knows everything), she has become my encourager of sorts. I consider an encourager one of the greatest people in the world, they are the exhorters, or encouragers, those sent to help, Heb. 10:25.

Every single day I’m out and about walking I look for her, she always has something to say, and boy does it lift me up. A lady in a green dress sent by God to spur me on, I give glory to Him! You see, I really need her, and start looking for her as soon as I turn the corner onto South Street. Her words of encouragement and uplifting spirit sends me up the street faster and faster, eyes straight ahead, back postured for greatness, my stride moving just right.

She stirs a sense of pride in me, a tenacity I didn't think I possessed. She deposits something in me, something I need but seldom get from others. I don’t see much change in the way I look, but she goes on and on as I wave and say, thank you, and God bless you. I know God has sent her, just for me!

She makes me aware of my need to lift others up, as she pours into my life, I must pour into the lives of others. She is mentoring me in a way, though she may not even realize what she’s really doing, but I’m aware! The lady in the green dress, has really helped to enhance my life for the better, each person so valuable in their own way. Thank you lady in the green dress!
Blessings,
Torrence

SECOND DAY, SUCCESSFUL

The morning air was very nice and the wind helped tremendously as I strove down the alley on my way to my healthier me. One of my goals is to get up earlier and get my walking in, as the “heat is on”….I was so proud that by 8:00 am this morning, I had my 3 mile walk already, my healthy breakfast, and supplements, water and a good bm!!

I walk in the afternoons too, but there’s something special about the early mornings for me. Have to push myself though, mornings are nice times to sleep in and goof off, especially now that working outside the home isn’t an every day event for me anymore.

AND AWAY I GO!!!!

Sitting on the sofa looking at the Celtics and Lakers battling it out(yeah like to see the boys play), a thought came to me: blog your meals for the month. I didn’t particularly like the thought, I am sometimes transparent, but this is a bit much! I use two other websits, Peertrainer and Sparkpeople where I log things, meals and all, but no one personally knows me, though I have made many friends and lead a group on Peertrainer, (Glenda's Friends). I needed a moment!!! Talking about accountability…….

But then I really felt it and said so what, why not, so here goes. I have prepared my meals for tomorrow, preparation is key for me, I lose it when I start “starring in the fridge” looking for something to eat!

If you really care about me, give me feedback ,I give you permission to help me. The boxer Joe Frazier said “All of us at some time in our life, are like the man at the stop light waiting for someone to help him across”. For you see, no man is an island unto himself. Thanks!

Breakfast:
1 cup plain oatmeal
½ cup fresh strawberries
Cup yogurt(plain)
2 tablespoons wheat germ
Slice whole grain bread (toasted)
Water

Lunch:

Toss salad with 2 tbls. Vidalia vinagrette dressing
Apple
1 tsp. pine nuts
2 tsp. flaxseeds
½ cup lentils
Water
cup green tea

Dinner:

Cup turnip greens seasoned with chicken broth
½ cup brown rice
½ cup black beans
1 cup summer squash (love the squash!!)
water
cup green tea

Snack:
GR2 Control Protein bar
Green tea
apple

STREAKING.....AGAIN

Since reaching my 22 day mile streaking walk, I’m gathering momentum, hope its not too much for me……I read an article in the O magazine that really inspired me. I am so taken away with the idea because I’m not easily inspired....

Carol Mithers, a writer and journalist challenged herself to go where she has never gone before!!! This in and of iself takes guts LOL. She went on a 30 day jig of eating NOTHING but what was good for her. No junk, no empty calories, no grease and sweets (the best of all!.). As I was reading I was thinking, is she crazy, even I can’t maintain such an endeavor!

She told of her journey and how she was successful eating in her own words “perfect” for 30 days straight. She said it was hard for two weeks and then she was fine. I must commend Ms. Mithers and I plan to write her at O once I finish this challenge, and finish it I will.

My start date is tomorrow, as I need to do a bit of shopping and “pumping myself up. Ha Ha, did you fall for that!!! Really, I do need to go to the store, I crack my own self up.......

Ms. Mithers concentrated on eating by colors which is an excellent idea. I will be sure I include protein in each meal, and only eat good carbs, there are a lot of them to choose from, of course I like the bad ones… And supplements, oh yeah, daily liquid multi- vitamin/mineral, coQ10, the omega threes (good fats),wonderful Nutricalm, and of course my favorites ANTIOXIDANTS! I will basically use the low glycemic index foods, can't go wrong there! And there will be other supplements like garlic that must be included for good health. Fiber, both soluble and insoluble and water will be the clincher, they stave off cravings and keep the bowels moving, a must for good health and weight loss (I'm going for both).

Anyway, this will be a challenge so please say a prayer for me. Of course eating right and losing weight is mostly mental, but not all mental. I figure if I could walk 3 miles a day for 22 days, and I have continued since reaching my goal, I can do anything!!! David, my main motivator told me "you can do it, just take one day at a time. Well, anyway, here goes. If I blunder I'll let you know, just like I tell you the good stuff....Seems fair to me. I have a new slogan (I use them to stay motivated) thinking before I bite is my new catchy phrase. THINK BEFORE I BITE. Steady Freddie, don't blow it!!

A WONDERFUL SERVICE

Its always good to get in the word of God and have time with Him and others. On Saturday nights, we have service in our home, I call it a mission in the city. Tonight was good as usual, we sang and prayed and each member gave the Word God had placed on their heart. Some nights I speak or Bro. John, however the Lord leads...

Its wonderful to see how our children are developing and understanding God and His Word, and we give thanks to Him.

David almost always read something from the book of Proverbs, from a child this has been his “favorite” book in the Bible. He read tonight from Proverbs 30:24-28 and really gave good insight about the ant and the unity they establish by working together and how they are an example for us to follow, and to do the same. He started by saying “one ant alone can’t do much, but working together they get a lot accomplished and fulfill the preparations for the months ahead in summer." Working together, they meet their goal, and all can rejoice at the end product. They use forethought and get busy working as a team to finish a common goal.

As he was talking, I thought how wonderful if people had that much sense!! Instead of pulling and fighting each other, why not work together to get the job done. I guess we could if we weren’t so selfish. You see, the ant can’t think only of himself, nothing would ever get done!!

Oh God, we will take your Word, and be like the ant!!
