Broccoli Mango Smoothie

I usually use green leafy veggies for my green smoothies, but I decided to use broccoli this time, since they're still producing in the garden. It was surprisingly delicious, and it's good to mix things up. I wanted to share this recipe with you guys.

Broccoli Mango Smoothie

5 broccoli florets
handful spinach
pear, cored and chopped
apple, cored and chopped
cup frozen berry blend
inch nob ginger, chopped
1/2 lemon, peeled and seeded
1 1/2 cups filtered water...5 ice cubes

I like to blend my greens a bit with some of the water, then add the other ingredients. Blend for about 30 seconds or until smooth and creamy.

Makes about 2 to 3 servings
375 calories
15g fiber (that's a lot of fiber)
6g protein
85g carbs
Enjoy...what's in your blender today?

Emotions and Weight-Loss...Real Talk!

Today is my second day with the Shred lifestyle plan, it's a good plan but it requires you  eat meals every 3 or 4 times a day and 2 snacks. I'm about to have oatmeal with blueberries and milk. I'm learning to stay on a plan, to be consistent and to be dedicated to something again. On July 1, 2010, I looked in the mirror and said to myself, "could I go a day without eating salt, sugar and no junk..I said "YEAH ME". I started that day and did this for one year and 2 months, losing a big 38 pounds and feeling really good about my efforts. I called my plan (that I didn't plan), No salt, no sugar, no junk..YEAH ME! It was a cute little jingle for me. I did not use the salt box or salt shaker and did not add sugar to anything!..I would make lemonade for the family and not even taste it..I baked a birthday cake for my daughter, and one for my grand-children, but DID NOT touch. I was in THE ZONE.
There would be donuts in the cabinets..I didn't touch, ice cream in the frig..well you get it! There has never been a time in my life that I felt that good..all over.

But something happened....and it hurt me, and I got in a funk, and still now trying to get out. I have lost a total of 43 pounds, and trying to get back emotionally so I can move forward.
I have learned many things on this weight-loss journey but one is key..I will share this today!

EMOTIONS...those little things(that become big things) that rocks everyone's world.
The dictionary says..Emotions are a natural instinctive state of mind deriving from one's circumstances, mood, or relationships with others. Any of the particular feelings that characterize such a state of mind, such as joy, anger, hate, horror etc. In other words "feelings". Here lies the delimima..feelings usually makes us react. [The old French word esomvoir means to excite, from latin emovere means to disturb, from movere..to move. I got it, something happens to excite your feeling (joy, anger, rejection, sadness etc), and this causes a reaction..maybe movement.

I realize..finally that I tend to move toward food when I'm hurt, feel threatened, sad, and the like. It has taken me years to admit that I, Glenda am an emotional eater. There, I said! I feel like I'm at a AA meeting, hahaha.

If you're having trouble losing weight, don't look to the gym, the kitchen, or to that walk around the block. Look rather in your head and your heart, weight-loss (or not), and emotions goes hand in hand. Unless there are medical issues or enviromental triggers the only thing standing in your way could very well be your emotions. And they are real, I'm not down playing them, but we must face them, keep them in check and go on and meet your goals. I realize they have hindered me in many ways, especially in my eating habits, but I can change, I will change, I am changing.

I can't blame everything on my emotions but they have reared their ugly head way too many times.
My focus now is to be more "in touched" with my feelings, watch those triggers, journal more, put pen and pencil to my feelings instead of frying a batch of chicken! You see where I am? I am examining "why" I'm eating now...not just "what' I'm consuming. I've also invited God into my journey, before I sorta thought, "well He gave me common sense", but I need Him in every area, and He helps me with those emotions, those feelings of rejection and those past hurts when they come into my head. He reminds me of who I am in Him, not who others have tried to make me be...it is wonderful! I stand on Galatians 6:9.."And let us not loose heart and faint in acting nobly and doing right, for in due time and at the appointed season we shall reap, if we do not loosen and relax our courage and faint."

Emotions are key, let's use them to our advantage, take deep breaths, drink more water, grab a fruit, make a smoothie, haha...and pray. We can do this! We will do this!
Peace out!

MOBILITY

I've been having mobility troubles here of late. But I won't quit, I won't give up and I won't walk too much, haha. I will, I believe at some point in my life, need knee replacement surgery on my right knee. Enjoying a nice game of tennis with my sister years a go, landed me on my right knee, causing an injury that now has become a problem.

. I was a college tennis player, my aspirations were off the hook, I was pretty good too...until Brenda came home from California for a visit and wanted to play a game or two!....Off to the courts we went, it was high drama...until one of her yellow balls sailed way too far, but I was gonna get it! But instead, I fell on that cement, more embarrassed than hurt, brushing myself off, I was ready to play again.
Little did I know at the time, the hospital would have been a better idea. I would feel the pain off and on over the years, but just kept going, I'm tough you know!

But as the years mounted and as age continued and as a little too much weight multiplied, the knee screamed. I didn't know till recently but that fall made my knee crooked. Yes, crooked, I have walked with a crooked knee all these years, arthritis set in because it was out of joint; now it's bone on bone. But still I do pretty good, and even walked 25 minutes today.

If you have good knees and can walk and go the gym and all that good stuff, let me encourage you to do so. Because when mobility is challenged, it's a different world, believe me!

I thank God for the years and for keeping me mobile even in the midst of my ignorance. Thank you Lord for MOBILITY!  Blessings!

Healing for ALL the stripes of life!!!

"Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. 5) But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed." Is. 53:4-5. We are praying tonight for God to deliver us from all the stripes for which he died for us. We think a ...lot about physical healing, but God is able to heal us everywhere we hurt! He died for our stripes of griefs, sorrows, afflictions, rejections, heart-brokenness, our emotions that have been wounded and on and on....Let us not limit God to just the physical healings...by HIS stripes.....we can be healed and set free in EVERY area! Jesus was rejected and felt sorrows and he has taken our stripes for us! Let's give it all to Him, and watch him healed us COMPLETELY!

COME ON...TAKE A RISK!!!

“And it came to pass at midnight, that the man was afraid, and turned himself: and, behold, a woman lay at his feet. And he said, Who art thou? And she answered, I am Ruth thine handmaid: spread therefore thy skirt over thine handmaid: for thou art a near kinsman.” Ruth 3:8-9.

What in the world was she thinking? How in the world could she do this? Why in the world would she choose to follow her aged mother-in-law to a land and place she had only heard of? This place called Bethlehem, this land called Israel, this God that cannot be seen, this people who are called “chosen”. What would she do there, she had no job, no skill, no land; how would they treat her, hard questions that must be answered by Ruth the Moabitess. But she took a risk…

Life is risky business sometimes, and the way can seem unclear and frightening. I remember years ago when the Lord lead me to move to Durham, North Carolina. I was a practicing Social Worker in my home town and the Lord just turned my whole world upside down! The Lord told me to resign my position there at Caswell Center and move to Durham…I heard his calling and obeyed; not knowing what I would find there. That obedience lead me to The Church of God and my husband of nearly 27 years, and a lot of water under the bridge! But it was risky..haha
Risky for me but not for God who knows the end from the beginning, who holds all of us in the palm of his hand, I trusted him and the journey has been bitter sweet. Back to Ruth.

At such a young age she had faced the death of her husband, not easy at any age and she now stands at the brink of an uncertain future. Who would take care of her, who would love her and share her dreams again? Of course she could turn and go back with Oprah her sister-in-law, back to her family, back to her people, back to their gods. But God had another plan for her life, an unseen plan by the unseen God.

Naoami and Ruth, going on a long journey by the hand of the God that they could not see.

Naomi had many sadnesses of her own, loss of husband and loss of both sons had no doubt made her “mara”, not the “pleasant” Naomi of old and better days. But she still knew and believed in the God of Israel, so she takes Ruth and journey on.

What would she find back home, they had abandoned The House of Bread (Bethlehem) many years ago when the famine hit the land. Her home is there no more, she’s too old to work, she has no inheritance there, what is going through her mind, her soul, her spirit? Still she travels on….
The long journey completed, Ruth goes to the fields to work and keep them alive, but unknowingly to find her future, her destiny…her inheritance in Israel. Haha..what a story, what a wonderful, wonderful story.
According to the law of Moses, the farmers had to leave provision for the poor and aliens, the welfare system that God instituted, saved their lives, but she had to work. It was risky. .but God was behind the scene. Many bad things could happen in those fields, with those sometimes uncaring and unscrupulous people around those field edges. Working with people on jobs can be risky, but some risks must be taken to survive, we must have God to go before us in all our endeavors.

With the hand of God and the aged, wise Naomi, Ruth hits pay dirt, and runs smack dab into her goel, near kinsman, and husband Boaz.

Ruth happened to come to the section of the field that belonged to Boaz, not just a close acquaintance of Naomi’s husband Elimelech, but a very “near” kinsman. (Ruth 2:20). But it was no happenstance, the unseen God was moving, directing, his plan for all their lives. So it is with us…come on …take a risk!

Ruth found favor with God and her near kinsman, he had heard of her kindness to Naomi her mother-in-law, you see people are looking at our lives, and listening to what others are saying about us. Read Ruth 2:1-23.

Naomi directs her to take perhaps the biggest risk of her life, she instructs her to a proposal to Boaz. Yes, read Ruth 3:1-18. The request that Boaz “spread his skirt over thine handmaid” is a symbolic pledge of marriage. (cf. Ezek 16:8-14). There are some areas in the Near East that still continue this custom. Risky business, she could be killed if someone saw her there, and if she got out alive, the talk….for he said “Let it not be known that a woman came into the floor”. (v14).

The elderly wealthy Boaz shows her respect and sends her home full of grain and hope for a better future and home..and so it was!

Boaz, willing and able to fully serve as the goel both in the redeeming of the field and in the marriage of Ruth the Moabitess. This reminds me of a rich savior who came and died for a improverished people, thus bringing us to Himself as his beloved Bride.

The risks that Ruth took were really in the very plan of God, and so it may be with us.

Boaz and Ruth married and had a son, “And the women her neighbors (Naomi) gave it a name, saying, There is a son born to Naomi; and they called his name Obed: he is the father of Jesse, the father of David”.

The reunion of Boaz and Ruth came the line of descendants that gave birth to King David, through whom Jesus Christ came. Ruth’s name means generous, loving and loyal, she was strong and able to take unusual risks, and was able to deal with the consequences that presented themselves to her. What a woman!
WOW….good job Ruth, your risks really paid off! Come on….Take a risk, it may be the greatest move of your life! Blessings!
