Propitiation
Romans 3:25.. God presented Jesus as a sacrifice of atonement.
“Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God:” (v 25).
While describing how God provided us with undeserved righteousness, Paul goes to the Old Testament (see Lev.17:11). But now, the life offered as sacrifice is not a spotless animal, but Christ. God removed our punishment through the “perfect” sacrifice of Jesus Christ, this meant his death, the shedding of his blood.
Propitiation is the act of God, moved by his great love for mankind, whereby He ACCEPTS the blood of Christ as complete and satisfying sacrifice. Thus establishing a means of reconciliation between God and man. Oh Hallelujah!
The blood of Jesus is the propitiation for the sins of the whole world (1 John 2:2), the complete benefits are available only to those who by faith accept this provision for sin.
The classic theological term for this process, (sacrifice of atonement) is propitiation (hilasterion). This word signifies a substitution sacrifice whereby sinful people can be reconciled (brought back) to a righteous God! Christ took our place in receiving the wrath of God poured out for sin. On the cross, Jesus stepped into the line of fire in front of us who deserved the wrath of God, and it was aimed at us! Now because of what Jesus did on the cross, God can accept all of us who put our trust in Jesus.
Are you trusting Him today? Those of us who have benefited from this expression of God’s love ought to love one another. (1 John 4:10,11).
